How Starting a Blog That Matters Can Change Your Life

Start a Blog

If there is one thing I’ve learned over the past few years it is that each and every person already has the power to change their life for the better. To truly make a significant change they just need to take control themselves.

No one is going to hand you the perfect life. You need to reach out and take it.

If you want a life of freedom, location independence, or working for yourself, starting a blog is one of the best first steps towards getting there.

Not sure it can happen to you? Here’s my story.

My Blogging Story

15 months ago, I was struggling to figure out what my perfect life would be like. I had just proposed to my now wife, graduated my night school MBA program, and maintained a comfortable (albeit unfulfilling) corporate career. After a failed attempt with some friends at creating an indie video game, I began to really dive into what I wanted from a “job”.

I knew that I wanted to do work that interested me, was different everyday, taught me new skills, and challenged me to grow. Those were all great, but everyone else I talked to wanted the same things. What I wanted out of my work wasn’t specific enough to me.

Back at the drawing board I took a different approach. I knew that I wanted to make a major difference in the world and leave it a better place than it was when I was born. I wanted to do something that mattered. I didn’t just want to be doing a job that any person (or trained animal) could do for the rest of my life.

The Satisfied Life Triangle

At first I thought I wanted to only help people with their personal finances, but then I realized that in order for someone to be truly happy and satisfied in life there are three areas that need to be in balance.

  1. Money: At least enough to get by, but ideally enough to live comfortably (in the present and future).
  2. Work: Satisfying, interesting, and doing something that matters for less time each year.
  3. Life: Creating a simplified and stress-free lifestyle of freedom.

Without balance in all three of these areas, someone’s life can fall apart.

  • You could be rich doing something you enjoy, but if you are always stressed out and have no freedom to do what you want, you won’t be happy.
  • If you win the lottery and retire at 30 to go live on a tropical beach, your life will slowly become unimportant as you realize you don’t have any goals to work towards.
Balance is the key to a happy life.

The Breakthrough

When I decided to start this blog in December 2010 I knew I either had to give it my all or it was going to be a waste of time. I had run a few blogs on wordpress.com or blogspot for personal journals or for fun with friends, but if this blog was going to make a difference I was going to have to treat it like a legacy project.

Since I already had a full-time job, I started spending my nights, weekends, lunch hours, time spent waiting in line, and almost every waking minute thinking about how my blog would “change the world”.

Looking back now to fourteen months ago, there is no way I would be able to predict the chain of events that would so greatly impact the lives of my wife and I. At the time we were both in unfulfilling traditional careers trying to figure out “what to do with our lives”. Now we both love what we do everyday for “work”, especially as she works to become one of the premier wedding and portrait photographers in San Diego.

If I would have never started a blog, my life would probably be exactly the same as it was 15 months ago.

I would be dreading everyday of work, daydreaming of travel in my cubicle, and dying a little bit each day. Blogging opened up the opportunity to work for Insanely Useful Media starting last summer (just seven months after starting Pocket Changed) and giving my wife and I the freedom to first road trip all over the United States for three months and then move us back by her family and the sun in San Diego.

Yes, Blogging Can Be Intimidating

Don’t get me wrong, blogging is a ton of work. If you just want to start making money quickly either get another traditional job or start freelancing a skill you have.

Blogging takes time, effort, and perseverance, but it has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.

Everyday I get to work with people that are living a life based on what they are passionate about. I no longer have to “go through the motions” at work and live by someone else’s terms.

Being an entrepreneur is a “harder” life to live, but the bigger rewards such as freedom and happiness make me feel richer than money ever could.

How You Can Start a Blog that Matters

A ton of different people inspired me to start my own blog (Chris Guillebeau, J.D. Roth, Sean Ogle, Jenny Blake, Pat Flynn, and a ton more), but no single person had a bigger impact on the growth of this site and changing my life than Corbett Barr.

Through originally taking his course Traffic School and then becoming his full-time employee, I’ve learned so much about how to build a blog and audience online. Corbett lives and breathes blogging.

Last month Corbett and I released the course How to Start a Blog that Matters and there are already over 500 people working hard to change their lives through blogging. We have both poured everything we know about the first 90 days of blogging into the course and it includes thousands of dollars worth of training for under $100. The action plans alone are worth the price of admission.

If you’d like to start your own blog, or even if you already have and aren’t satisfied with your progress so far, pick up the blogging course and I’ll give you a free 30-minute kick-off call with me.

If you’re not interested, that is great too. Just realize that while you think blogging may be too crowded now, know that blogging is still young and the sky is the limit for the potential project you could build if you put in the time and effort.

If you already have a blog, how has blogging changed your life?

If you don’t have a blog, what are you waiting for?

Blogging has lead me to a lot of opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I’ve created a lot of connections, and it’s given me a way to showcase some of the work that I do, too.

I think it’s important to realize that the blog itself might just be the tip of the iceberg. While many people earn a great living from their blogs, there’s so many more benefits beyond the things that a blog can directly provide for you.

I couldn’t agree more with you. One of the best rewards I’ve received is the chance to meet people in your industry who would never have given you the time of day if you didn’t have a blog!

Exactly. The connections are totally worth it.

While my wife and I were on the road we met up with over 10 awesome people that I could reach out to simply because we both have blogging in common.

Absolutely. I love the iceberg metaphor. I think it is better to have an actual business idea first that the blog can supplement instead of expecting your blog to turn itself into a business.

I feel ya, Caleb. I started blogging less than a year ago, and my life is in a completely different spot because of it. I’ve found fulfillment, enjoyment and purpose, and I (like you have) am leaving my silly cubicle job in a few months to travel the country indefinitely. My life has done a 180 and I’ve never been happier (or, as I like to call it, “sanely crazier”)

That’s awesome Therese! If you end up in San Diego on your road trip let me know and we’ll meet up.

I like the new design at the Unlost too. Looking slick!

I launched my personal blog in July 2011. This event dramatically changed my life in many parts.

The part I’m going to share here is the meaning Blogging gives to my life.

I now live a more meaningful life. Not 100% of the time cause I’m still struggling with my daily job (due to money affairs) but my whole day and existence has a fresh , new and authentic perspective now.

I’m fond of helping people. I’ve been advising people (friends, families members, adults) since my childhood. I can do this 24/24h forever without asking for money. I love it and the pieces of advice I give are related to all the compartments of life. Devouring books has been very helpful for cultivating such knowledge and expertise. And this is what I long to do to support myself for the rest of my life.

BredouAlbanBrice.com which is the personal development blog I created, give me everyday the unique opportunity to reach my goal and be completely happy.

My days are more coloured, beautiful and meaningul..thanks to blogging.

I do advise (as I used to) every human bein to start a blog THAT MATTERS cause we all have a message, a voice that needs to be heared.

Keep up writing Cale..I do love your insightful articles.

Caleb - great stuff!

What I love about blogging is that you fundamentally have to be a creator of truly valuable insights. Creating is much more satisfying than merely consuming.

Also, life becomes much more interesting when you’re thinking about how your experiences can be shared with others to benefit them. It’s a great way to live each day.

Finally, I’m currently going through the “How to Start a Blog that Matters” course and you guys knocked it out of the park. It’s seriously the best investment of time and money I’ve made in years (and it wasn’t even that expensive given what you’re providing).

Hi Caleb,
Starting my blog in January of 2011 was a huge turning point in my life. I didn’t even go on FaceBook before I started my blog and now I am all over the web. It has been a rewarding journey to say the least.

How has blogging revolutionized my whole life? Really, blogging doesn’t only create an avenue for one to earn some pocket change, it also does help one become more creative by exercising the brain power through doing thorough researches, reading, and writing. Ever since I got acquainted with blogging, my life has becoming more meaningful- I am now more involved in studying personal development and how best life can be lived. Blogging, I believe, is the best way one can begin imparting his genius, creativity, and passion to impact the world. I am currently renovating my blog to give it a nicer look.

Wonderful point Giles. Blogging can be used for the betterment of yourself as well. By spending the time and effort learning about the topics you share you can end up becoming an expert in that quickly.

Just last Tuesday I was able to speak with one of my most admired people in the industry whom I’ve looked up to since I was a teenager and it’s because of a blog I started (but under a pseudonym and DEFINITELY not in any marketing niche) in 2009.

It was one of the most amazing experience ever and I’m under consideration to become a contributor in his site!

Not to mention that blogging has also pushed me to discipline myself and become consistent with the things I do.

Caleb….
I found your guest post at Cybil’s …which compelled me to come here.
You’re talking to the choir. I started my newbie solo blog in December….thanks to James Chartrand at DFW.

I am loving the steep learning curve. I’m a big fan of Corbett’s for quite a while (have a group gardening blog….www.gardeninggonewild.com) and have been tempted tosign up for his course. I know it will be extremely useful. I need to get through Jon Morrow’s Guestblogging course before making another commitment.

Until then, I’m on ThinkTraffic’s mailing list and feel that it’s ‘meant to be’ that I found you! Fran

The day this was posted I launched my blog following the course’s directions. So far so good, I know It will take sometime to get to the point where I want it to be. At least I finally took the first step the right way. I highly recommend the course…

Awesome Joe! Glad you are enjoying the course. We worked hard to put way more value into the course than most things you can buy online at that price.

I think I should really get that blogging course, I have started few blogs but these did not get anywhere. I do read all the top blogging blogs and theoretically I should know really what to do and how to do it but yet something is missing. Anyway, that blog here is a great achievement, amazing what you have done in just two years.

Hey Hando,

I highly recommend the course. It will walk you through every step to get you on your feet and the weekly lessons will tell you exactly what you should be working on for the first 90 days+.

Cheers!

Caleb,

I am so happy that I found your site. I am in the early stages of my blog and I am definately making progress. I have been considering Corbett’s course because I am finding that I still need a lot of direction and am having trouble prioritizing what the correct steps are to make the biggest impact.

I am excited to hear about your success and I am determined to be successful as well. I like the idea of treating your blog as a “legacy project” I think a lot of people have dabled (including myself) in blogging, and looking at it this way gives it more meaning.

I will be following your blog now that I have found it!

Hey Brooklyn,

The course would be right up your alley if you are just starting out. It will help you prioritize the correct steps you should really focus on taking through the first 90 days especially. Each lesson has “homework” that you can work your way through each week and keep you on track.

I wish I would have had a course like it when I was just starting!
